A project on the infamous Komagata Maru incident has resulted in a King Traditional Elementary student receiving the honour of being the Fraser Valley’s representative at the National Historica Fair in Ottawa in July. Sukhman Sidhu’s project was awarded the one National Student delegate spot from the recent Fraser Valley Historica Fair.
Adjudicators also chose four students to attend the BC Provincial Heritage Fair, June 29 to July 3 in Victoria. Two came from Abbotsford School District schools: Kirsten MacDonald from Dormick Park Elementary, with her project “My Home...A Living Legacy”, and Zander Baerg, another King Traditional student, with his project “Philip Jackman”.
Austin Broad is also recognized as a top ten student delegate at the 2009 Fraser Valley Regional Historica Fair for his presentation on the 1948 Fraser River Flood. Congratulations to all grade five students from King for developing excellent displays and presentations.

A Message From the Principal |
|
As a school community we will be focussing on health and fitness as one of our school goals again this year. That means teachers will be providing students with a minimum of 30 minutes of physical activity everyday, as well as providing many opportunities for students to learn about making healthy choices, keeping active and selecting nutritious food. As part of this focus students will be able to participate in house games, team sports, inter-school competitions in track and field, soccer, volleyball, basketball, and Kilometre Club. Whether you play soccer at lunchtime, or use a skipping rope to create new routines with your friends, there will be great activities for everyone.
Students at King will also be working on strategies to become even better readers. Although King is ranked one of the top academic schools in the province, we are always striving to improve our academic standing so we can continually be the best that we can be - individually as students and collectively as a school. We envision a whole community that enjoys reading and talking about good books. This means making best use of our library and our computer lab. Our hope is to make our hallways hum with reading.
We at King traditional School are privileged to teach your children. I tell our students that I brag about them every chance I get, and they are worth bragging about! King students have the reputation of being courteous, responsible young people. We work hard at our school work, and are actively involved in our community.
Please join me in being a part of another fantastic year of celebrating learning here at King Traditional Elementary School.
Parents, rest assured that your children are in safe hands.
~ Mrs. A. Wiebe

As of January 1, 2008 all elementary schools must comply with the new provincial Healthy Eating Policy. This is great news for our kids, but it means that some of the foods previously sold at the school are no longer permitted. This policy covers all foods sold to students (eg. hot lunch, fund raisers, etc.). The policy is very detailed and complex. A huge “thank-you” goes out to Arlene Campbell for all of the work that she is doing to find foods that comply with the policy and are still a treat for our kids. This is a very time consuming process and there is a steep learning curve, so we thank-you in advance for your patience as we adapt to the new policy. If you look at the policy at http://www.bced.gov.bc.ca/health/guidelines_sales07.pdf you will see what I mean! If you would like to help implement this new policy and help out with hot lunch, you can contact Arlene at roarme1@telus.net.
Please note as well that the cost of hot lunch will go up as the foods that meet the criteria in the healthy eating policy do cost a little more.
We look forward to having healthier kids in 2008!
